We’re almost there. Less than a week away from the Academy Awards, and just two articles to go. So we can talk about our diet the last few months watching and writing about all of these films (please do not tell our doctor, we technically are all bourbon pizza-tarians at the moment) (and no, it’s not drinking bourbon AND pizza.) (We can’t get into further details).
So after writing about the Best Picture, Actor, Actress and Supporting Actor nominations, it’s time for Best Supporting Actress.
Teyana Taylor – One Battle After Another

What Is the Role?
Perfida, the member of a far-left revolutionary group and partner to “Ghetto” Pat Calhoun, who, as you can see, has a kid, whom she abandons after a robbery ends with her killing a guard. She got into witness protection after working a deal with Col. Lockjaw, a racist white supremist who became obsessed with her and had sex with her earlier to avoid jail time for planting a bomb. She eventually flees witness protection for Mexico after having given up all of her revolutionary colleagues.
Should She Win?
She’s amazing in this, but not really. It’s a true breakout performance (like literally she’s won awards for breakout performance) but we’re thinking a few other performances were just a tad more worthy – frankly, ranking the best supporting actress nominees is one of the toughest ones of the season. It’s a of 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1,e conumdrum.
Will She Win?
Maybe, but we’re leaning towards no. She’s definitely someone to look out for (and her performance got enough attention to get her to host SNL) but she’s not won most of the big awards after her Golden Globe win. We could see her being an upset (the, sigh, oddsmakers list her as the second likely to win) but we think it’ll go to a different actress.
Wummi Mosaku – Sinners

What Is the Role?
Annie, the estranged wife of Smoke and prominent Hoodoo practitioner who is brought on as the cook for Smoke and Stack’s juke joint. Then Irish hive mind vampires happen.
Should She Win?
Yeah, she’s more than deserving. In a film full of incredible performances (spoiler, we think they’ll win the newly minted Best Casting award) she still shines through.
Will She Win?
Probably not. She’s the third most likely to win, and while she did win the BAFTA and a few dozen other awards, she’s not the favorite, but if she earns a surprise win we’d not be mad in the least.
Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas – Sentimental Value

What Is the Role?
LIlleaas plays Agnes, the sister of Nora, a historian with her own family, including a son who her estranged father casts in his film, much to her frustration.
Should She Win?
Not really. It’s a great non-flashy performance but it sort of fades to the background compared to the other performances.
Will She Win?
If she won it would be one of the wilder upsets in a while, so we’re going to say no.
Amy Madigan – Weapons

What Is the Role?
Ho boy. She plays the aunt of the character Alex. But honestly if you haven’t seen Weapons you need to go in with as little information about the character as possible. But she be wildin’.
Should She Win?
Yup. It’s an unhinged performance (and role) but in all the good ways. It’s super rare for a genre film to win a major award, but she definitely earned her keep.
Will She Win?
She’s the runaway favorite, so yes. There’s always a chance for an upset but right now this is her award to lose.
Elle Fanning – Sentimental Value

What Is the Role?
Rachel Kemp, a famous American actress hired to play the new lead in the film that Gustav (who wanted his daughter Nora to play the role) is directing, before (spoiler) dropping out feeling she can’t quite do the character justice.
Should She Win?
Not really. She does great work, and it’s great to see her get her first Oscar nomination, but she’s only won a handful of minor awards, and has the lowest odds to win.
Will She Win?
Well, you can guess from the above, nope, it’s not her year.
Alright! ONE MORE POST to do! Where we just list all the other awards and super quickly say our guess on who will win. Stay tuned!
